Clean-up at Sars

Finweek English Edition - - IN THE NEWS -

Nene has appointed an advisory committee, chaired by retired judge Frank Koon, to look into governance at the South African Revenue Service ( Sars). This follows numerous reports of governance issues at Sars and the suspension and resignation of a number of top officials.

Nene was vague about the committee’s exact mandate, other than to say its aim was to help “restore the integrity of the institution.”

The committee’s main task is to guide its long-term direction and make sure decisions on operations, personnel, budget and technology support its plan.

It will advise Nene on Sars’s strategic and business plans, operational plans and budget.

It will review “events” reported on in recent months and advise Nene and the Sars Commissioner on how to prevent them from happening again.
