JAG was the first art museum that Lutyens designed and the only one of his ever built.

Lutyens based his JAG design on the design he made of Castle Drogo i n Devon, the last castle and probably the last residence built of granite in England. The construction of this castle began in 1911 and was completed in 1930.

Lutyens proposed that JAG should be built using bricks, but it was decided to construct it from sandstone. This increased the building costs tremendously and just a portion of Lutyens’ original design was initially built.
