More than 4 000 peo­ple were killed when a mag­ni­tude 7.8 earth­quake hit Nepal on 25 April. At the time of go­ing to press, the of­fi­cial count was that al­most 7 000 peo­ple were in­jured and about 100 000 left home­less. At least 11 South Africans were trapped on Mount Ever­est fol­low­ing the earth­quake, in­clud­ing Saray Khu­malo, who is at­tempt­ing to be the first black woman to con­quer the moun­tain.
