THE UGLY

Finweek English Edition - - IN BRIEF -

It is unacceptable that Lawyers for Human Rights had to go to court on 8 May to get access to around 400 foreign nationals detained during raids in Johannesburg; an interdict that was allegedly initially ignored by police. Is “Operation Fiyela”, involving midnight raids and people believed to be undocumented foreigners – some are actually South African, and many could have a legal right to be in the country – being rounded up like cattle to ‘clean up’ hot spots, the solution to xenophobia?
