It is un­ac­cept­able that Lawyers for Hu­man Rights had to go to court on 8 May to get ac­cess to around 400 for­eign na­tion­als de­tained dur­ing raids in Jo­han­nes­burg; an in­ter­dict that was al­legedly ini­tially ig­nored by po­lice. Is “Op­er­a­tion Fiyela”, in­volv­ing mid­night raids and peo­ple be­lieved to be un­doc­u­mented for­eign­ers – some are ac­tu­ally South African, and many could have a legal right to be in the coun­try – be­ing rounded up like cat­tle to ‘clean up’ hot spots, the so­lu­tion to xeno­pho­bia?
