In­done­sia and Malaysia fi­nally agreed on 20 May to pro­vide tem­po­rary shel­ter to an es­ti­mated 7 000 mi­grants who have been stranded at sea for weeks. The mi­grants are mainly from Bangladesh and the long-per­se­cuted Ro­hingya Mus­lim mi­nor­ity in Myan­mar. About 3 000 peo­ple have al­ready swum to shore or been res­cued af­ter a crack­down by Thai au­thor­i­ties on smug­gling routes led some of the gangs re­spon­si­ble to aban­don their hu­man cargo at sea, re­ported.
