The amount pri­vate sec­tor play­ers have com­mit­ted to in­vest­ing in re­new­able en­ergy in the coun­try since 2011. On 7 June, min­is­ter of en­ergy Tina Joe­mat-Pet­ters­son an­nounced an ad­di­tional 13 pre­ferred bid­ders as part of the re­new­able en­ergy pro­gramme. They will sup­ply an ad­di­tional 1 084MW to the grid. To date, 92 re­new­able en­ergy projects have been ap­proved by the depart­ment, which will con­trib­ute 6 327MW of ca­pac­ity to the grid. Medupi, Eskom’s mega coal-fired power sta­tion that is un­der con­struc­tion near Lepha­lale will add 4 800MW once com­plete.
