The Slinky, which was orig­i­nally de­vel­oped by me­chan­i­cal en­gi­neer Richard James as an anti-vi­bra­tion de­vice for ship in­stru­ments, is cel­e­brat­ing its 70th birth­day, The New YorkTimes re­ported. Le­gend has it that James ac­ci­den­tally knocked some of the springs off his desk and saw them take slink­ing steps, il­lus­trat­ing their po­ten­tial as a toy, it re­ported. More than 300m Slinkys have since been sold.
