In a re­cent Money­web col­umn, econ­o­mist Mike Schüssler high­lighted

In 1990, we ranked 50th in the world based on aver­age per capita in­come; we’ve since dropped to 86th (on aver­age, we’re worse off than the aver­age per­son from China, Azer­bai­jan, Turk­menistan, Be­larus and Bul­garia). On a per capita ba­sis, the aver­age South African earns only 63% of the aver­age world ci­ti­zen. In 1994, SA was the 25th big­gest econ­omy in the world; last year we were 33rd.
