ESKOM TARIFF REQUEST 16.6%
Utility Eskom has applied to increase electricity tariffs by up to 16.6% next year. It already has permission from regulator Nersa to raise tariffs by 8% in 2016, but Eskom says this increase is insufficient to cover its costs. The utility is allowed to apply for additional increases where actual costs exceed the projections used by Nersa to determine Eskom’s multi-year tariff increases. The additional increase requested is to recover essential cost overruns of R22.8bn from the 2013/14 financial year. Nersa will determine how much of this is deemed to be essential costs.
