WEAK RAND BOOSTS TOURISM 15%
Tourist arrivals in January increased by 15% year-on-year (YOY) to nearly 1.6m thanks to a weaker rand and the relaxation of visa regulations, tourism minister Derek Hanekom said in a briefing to Parliament’s tourism committee. China in particular showed strong growth as Chinese visitors could apply for their visas through accredited travel agencies, Business Day reported Hanekom as saying. He was optimistic that South African Tourism’s growth forecast of 2% over the 2016/17 reporting period would be exceeded. Arrivals declined 6.8% YOY over the 2015/16 period.
