South Africa has im­ported over 70 000 tons of white maize from Mex­ico and Zam­bia in the cur­rent mar­ket­ing year, which ends on 30 April, ac­cord­ing to data from the South African Grain In­for­ma­tion Ser­vice (Sagis). It also im­ported 1 330 tons from the US ear­lier in April, the first time white maize has been im­ported from that country since 2004, Reuters re­ported. In­dus­try ex­perts ex­pect more than 1m tons of white maize, the country’s sta­ple food, will have to im­ported be­tween May and April 2017 be­cause of the im­pact of the drought on do­mes­tic pro­duc­tion.
