The jobs of approximately 60 000 employees in various industries across the country have been in the balance in the past year due to large-scale retrenchment processes, according to research by trade union Solidarity. Employees in the mining industry are hit hardest, with 36 companies having been engaged in retrenchments since April 2015, affecting nearly 30 000 employees. The union warned that these retrenchment numbers do not reflect the full impact on the economy. In the mining sector, for example, 1.7 external jobs are lost for every retrenchment made, it said.
