The North Gaut­eng High Court ruled that Pres­i­dent Ja­cob Zuma should face the 783 charges of fraud, rack­e­teer­ing and cor­rup­tion against him that were dropped in 2009 af­ter pros­e­cu­tors said there was po­lit­i­cal in­ter­fer­ence in the mat­ter. The judges de­scribed the de­ci­sion to drop the charges as “ir­ra­tional”. While the re­vival of the charges is a vic­tory for the rule of law, the DA’s James Selfe told the Fi­nan­cial Times it re­mains to be seen whether the Na­tional Prose­cut­ing Au­thor­ity will pur­sue the case with the “vigour that is needed for a suc­cess­ful prose­cu­tion”.
