Thou­sands of gold min­ers suf­fer­ing from sil­i­co­sis got the green light from the High Court in Jo­han­nes­burg on 13 May to sue the gold min­ing in­dus­try for com­pen­sa­tion. The num­ber of lit­i­gants could be as high as 500 000 and a trial, should it hap­pen, would cover the in­dus­try’s con­duct from 1965 to 2015, Busi­ness Day re­ported. The judg­ment listed ev­i­dence provided by the lit­i­gants that gold min­ing com­pa­nies dis­re­garded safety leg­is­la­tion in­tro­duced in 1965 and that, un­til as re­cently as 2008, the gold min­ing com­pa­nies showed “se­rial and per­va­sive non­com­pli­ance” with dust­con­trol laws, the pa­per re­ported.
