Finweek English Edition - - THE WEEK -

The trade unions represented at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) may be close to reaching an agreed position on a national minimum wage, which could result in a national minimum wage being established within months. Government has indicated that a monthly wage of just over R3 000 would be acceptable, roughly in line with the mandated position of the Federation of Unions. Cosatu is pressing for R4 500, but officials have hinted that this could drop to R3 700. The National Council of Trade Unions wants minimum wages on a regional or even sectoral basis.
