STUDENT DEBT

Finweek English Edition - - THE WEEK -

Students who benefitted from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) still owe the scheme R21.3bn, with a recovery programme launched in October 2015 only netting about R19.9m from 19 000 former students to date, The Citizen reported. In total, the state funding scheme has about 191 000 debtors, of whom about 110 000 were employed in the private sector and 81 000 by government. Nsfas said it planned to meet companies that employed most of its beneficiaries in an effort to recover what they owed, the newspaper reported. A lack of funding was one of the key issues current students have been protesting about.
