THE UGLY

Finweek English Edition - - THE WEEK -

Apart from the financial implications of the destruction caused during the Tshwane riots, the ruling party has yet again demonstrated its apparent inability to deal with explosive political situations. Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, who voiced concerns about the “tribalistic undertones” characterising the violence – some protestors expressed their opposition to Thoko Didiza as the ANC’s mayoral candidate because “she is Zulu” – was quoted by BDLive as having said that there “has to be a very clear message … SA does not tolerate violence and we call on all our people of Tshwane to desist and find better ways”. However, these “better ways” seem to be lacking for many, and in the months running up to local elections, we’re likely to see many more similar incidents.
