South African min­ing ma­jor An­glo Amer­i­can in­creased its pro­duc­tion of rough di­a­monds by 8% to 7.4m carats in the quar­ter ended 31 March, re­flect­ing the con­tri­bu­tion of Gah­cho Kué in Canada, as well as in­creases in re­sponse to im­proved trad­ing con­di­tions, it said in its quar­terly re­port on 24 April. The com­pany also re­ported pro­duc­tion gains in iron ore pro­duc­tion, with out­put from sub­sidiary Kumba in­creas­ing by 17% to 10.5m tonnes over the three months ow­ing to im­proved min­ing pro­duc­tiv­ity at the Sishen mine, and higher through­put at the Kolomela op­er­a­tion. “The op­er­at­ing im­prove­ments at Sishen and on­go­ing port­fo­lio re­fine­ments are fur­ther strength­en­ing An­glo Amer­i­can’s re­silience and com­pet­i­tive po­si­tion,” com­mented CEO Mark Cu­ti­fani.
