The number of tourists entering South Africa in April 2017 increased by 15.5% year-on-year to 902 973, figures released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on 26 June have shown. Of these, 222 055 were foreign tourists, while 680 918 came from other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. The highest increase (50.5%) was for tourists from Germany, followed by Switzerland (29.6%). About 72.5% of tourists used road transport and about 27.3% used air transport, while only 0.2% used sea transport. The majority of tourists (97.5%) were on holiday compared with 1.8% and 0.7% who came for business and for study purposes respectively.
