Asian shares lost ground on 4 July amid ten­sions on the Korean penin­sula af­ter North Korea suc­cess­fully fired its first in­ter­con­ti­nen­tal bal­lis­tic mis­sile, a “sig­nif­i­cant step for­ward” in Pyongyang’s weapons pro­gramme and an es­ca­la­tion of a “per­ilous nu­clear stand-off with the US”, NBC News re­ported. North Korea test-launched the mis­sile, which flew 930km but could have the ca­pac­ity to reach around 5 600km, only days ahead of a meet­ing of G20 lead­ers on 7 and 8 July in Ger­many. G20 lead­ers were ex­pected to ad­dress North Korea’s lat­est mis­sile launch at the sum­mit.
