In a hard-hitting statement, the former board of the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa), whose term ended at the end of July, accused transport minister Joe Maswanganyi of interfering with and undermining the board’s activities, which have been focused on addressing long-standing corruption and governance issues at Prasa. It completed a number of investigations and instituted legal proceedings on a number of matters, notably getting a R2.6bn unlawful contract with Swifambo Rail Leasing set aside. If this government was serious about addressing corruption, it would reappoint former Prasa chairman Popo Molefe to the board and allow the clean-up to continue.
