In what must be a first in re­cent his­tory, min­ing com­pa­nies and the two ma­jor unions in the sec­tor – NUM and its arch-ri­val Amcu – are united on one point: their dis­dain for min­is­ter of min­eral re­sources and close Gupta as­so­ciate Mosebenzi Zwane. All par­ties have ex­pressed con­cern over the lack of con­sul­ta­tion around the con­tro­ver­sial new Min­ing Char­ter and Zwane’s seem­ingly uni­lat­eral freeze on the trans­fer of min­ing and prospect­ing rights, which they say is putting jobs at risk. NUM has called for Zwane to be re­moved, say­ing its re­la­tion­ship with the min­is­ter is “the worst that we have ever had”, Reuters re­ported.
