The West­ern Cape gov­ern­ment has re­ceived the first tranche of money com­mit­ted to it by gov­ern­ment to re­build af­ter re­cent dev­as­tat­ing fires, and a pro­longed drought. This af­ter the Na­tional Disas­ter Man­age­ment Cen­tre (NDMC) de­clared the prov­ince a disas­ter area and fol­low­ing requests for fund­ing from var­i­ous mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties. Co­op­er­a­tive gov­er­nance and traditional af­fairs min­is­ter Des van Rooyen said the first tranche of R34.86m was trans­ferred on 21 Au­gust to the mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties of Cape Town, Bi­tou and Thee­wa­ter­skloof. A sec­ond tranche of R40m, to be spent on live­stock feed, would have been sent to the prov­ince on 31 Au­gust.
