As­sault char­ges af­ter fig­ht at pri­son

A fe­ma­le cor­recti­o­nal ser­vi­ce war­den, Nont­le Go­mo (42) and ANC Re­gi­o­nal Se­cre­ta­ry, Ma­jor So­kopo (44), ha­ve laid char­ges of as­sault a­gainst each ot­her fol­lo­wing an al­ter­ca­ti­on at Cor­recti­o­nal Ser­vi­ces in Ge­or­ge.

The in­ci­dent hap­pe­ned on Tu­es­day 9 Oc­to­ber on the grounds of the pri­son in front of the of­fi­ce of the Sout­hern Ca­pe Com­mis­si­o­ner.

Sgt Mi­cha­el Op­per­man, the Ge­or­ge com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ons of­fi­cer, con­fir­med the char­ges.

Ac­cor­ding to an ey­e­wit­ness an ar­gu­ment bro­ke out be­t­ween the two w­hen they pas­sed each ot­her at the Cor­recti­o­nal Ser­vi­ces fa­ci­li­ty at a­round 11:00. The ar­gu­ment al­le­ge­d­ly tur­ned vi­o­lent and in­clu­ded the thro­wing of so­me hard-boi­led eggs.

Cor­recti­o­nal of­fi­ci­als in­ter­ve­ned and se­pa­ra­ted the two.

Fol­lo­wing the scuf­fle, both Go­mo and So­kopo laid char­ges at the Ge­or­ge po­li­ce sta­ti­on.

Jo­han Pie­naar of the De­part­ment of Cor­recti­o­nal Ser­vi­ces con­fir­med that one of their em­ploy­ees was in­vol­ved in an in­ci­dent on the pri­son grounds.

"Ms Go­mo has o­pe­ned a ca­se with the po­li­ce and the in­ci­dent will al­so be in­ves­ti­ga­ted by the de­part­ment of cor­recti­o­nal ser­vi­ces."
