These are your beaches for the summer (rated by an expert), PLUS alfresco films, and an insane mission to cross the Atlantic...
EASTERN CAPE Port Elizabeth is the second-best city for beaches, with three Blue Flags. But just up the coast, Kelly’s in Port Alfred has been on the list for 12 years, nearby Kariega for eight – and now Boknesstrand, Kentonon-Sea and Kleinemonde are all in the pilot stage. Keep going, and the stretch near the Great Fish River mouth has Hamburg (already a Blue Flag gem) and Birah, Mtenthu and Mzamba with pilot status. Bonus The Amazing Event, planned for 17 – 20 December in Port Alfred, will include beach volleyball (32 national teams), jet-ski and MTB races, an anything-that-floats contest and more. Updates on the Zsports Facebook page.
KWAZULU-NATAL The South Coast boasts seven Blue Flags, while Durban has one (uShaka Beach). It’s the North Coast that’s making an effort – Umhlanga, Umdloti, Willard Beach (near Ballito), Salt Rock, Blythedale, Dokodweni and Zinkwazi are all in pilot phase. Bonus Umhlanga’s Summer Festival is on 12 – 23 December, umhlangafestivals.co.za. Dokodweni’s iBeach Xperience includes an adventure circuit, live music, pop-up food stalls and more, 27 – 29 December. ibeachxperience.co.za For more about Blue Flag beaches, visit wessa.org.za.
