THE WOMAN WHO’S SEEN THEM ALL

Getaway (South Africa) - - Escape -

To compile MapStudio’s Life’saBeach, a guide to SA’s beaches, Ann Gadd travelled some 9 500 kilometres along our coastline, from the Namibian border to Mozambique. There are few people in the country who can say they’ve done that. Here’s her choice of the best ‘all-rounder’ beaches: Island Beach, Groot Brak (Garden Route) Unexpected and enchanting, accessed via a single-lane bridge. Has estuary and sea swimming options. Gonubie, East London (Eastern Cape) One of the best beaches in SA, with lovely swimming. Scottburgh (KZN South Coast) Great swimming in the tidal pool or sea. Addington, Durban Safe swimming, loads of facilities and action in and out the water. Kraalbaai, Langebaan (West Coast) Parking and space are limited, but flat warm water, sheltered from the South Easter, makes this a magic family spot. (The Kite Windsurf Cup takes place near here on 2 – 8 January 2017. Find it on Facebook.) Tietiesbaai, Paternoster (West Coast) Cold water – but it can surprise with warmer water – and you have a small, protected bay, sand dunes and a magic pub. Most remote McDougall’s Bay, in the far north of the West Coast, is a ‘gem that has it all’. In the far north-east of KZN is Cape Vidal, ‘a long stretch of unspoilt beach, with vervet monkeys and turtles’. *Ann’ s Blue Flag favour i ties include Muizenberg’ s Surfers Corner, Buffalo Bay, Nature’ s Valley, P let t’ s Look out Beach, Kariega/K en ton and Zinkwazi.
