Meanwhile, in Johannesburg…

Getaway (South Africa) - - Travel Bites -

Chef Angelo Scirocco is a Liam Tomlin disciple and he’s introducing Joburg to the small-plate, shared-table mode of dining. His restaurant, Urbanologi, in Mad Giant Brewery is one of the most exciting new additions to the city’s dining landscape. It’s not far from Commissioner Street, which is historically Chinatown, so there’s synchronicity in Angelo’s Asian avantgarde approach. Do try a pint of The Guzzler pilsner (R34) with the deep-fried potatoes with seaweed emulsion (R35) – though the menu is worth exploring far beyond that first item, even Angelo considers this mayonnaise the best he’s ever made. When the weather’s good, claim a seat in the beer garden, which boasts a charcoal grill turning out seared beef pretzels with mustard and shredded cabbage pickled in aged beer vinegar. 1 Fox Street, Ferreirasdorp. 011-492-1399, urbanologi.co.za
