R1 299 (22-litre cooler) and R2 499 (45-litre cooler), rogueicecoolers.com
There’s something comforting about a cooler designed and built by South Africans who know how tough the outdoors can be. Instead of using injection or blowmoulded plastic, it is made following the same process as that used for white-water kayaks. This, plus a UV-resistant coating, genuine-leather straps and handles, and moulded hinges, create a robust unit (though we refrained from throwing it down stairs to test). The stand-out testable feature for us was the ice retention – we used the 45-litre on a weekend and still had oodles of ice come Monday morning. We also loved the non-slip feet, tethered drain plug and built-in bottle opener.
