MY TOP FIVE
Johnny Clegg has embarked on his ‘Final Journey’ world tour – his last concerts after a 40-year career. We asked him to share some of the best places he’s been
1 The Karoo: vast, flat, silent, and you’re constantly looking at the horizon. It makes you understand that you are so tiny in the scheme of things but there is a place for you if you choose.
2 Mpumalanga: it feels welcoming, with a multitude of mountains, rivers and vegetation, lush and green but also with thornveld. It feels like an ancient place where many peoples settled and lived out their dreams.
3 Namibia: open and, like the Karoo, the place if you’re looking for self-definition.
4 Red Rocks, near Denver, Colorado, USA: great hikes in a beautiful landscape. It also has the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
5 Emakhabeleni/Kranskop: on the Tugela River near Jameson’s Drift in KZN. I am an avid birder and the birdlife there is great. As a teenager I was interested in becoming a game ranger.
And where to from here? I’ve been involved in electronic waste recycling since 2004 ( ewaste.co.za). I hope to focus on this as well as my book. I will continue writing and recording songs, but public shows will be a thing of the past.
