Hiking lessons

Getaway (South Africa) - - INBOX -

Joined by more than 100 other hikers,

I took part in the Big5Hike for Education, a fundraising initiative for the Royal Drakensberg Primary School. Having summited the peaks backdropping The Cavern Resort & Spa in the Drakensberg, I had some time to reflect on what lessons to take away from the weekend.

Firstly, how nature opens her arms to people from all walks of life; from young children to oldies, city slickers to farmers, the outdoors is there for everyone’s enjoyment.

Secondly, how change is refreshing and we mustn’t shy away from it. I was initially disappointed when I drew open the curtains to find a layer of mist had descended upon the surrounding mountains, diminishing my hopes of the sweeping views that I couldn’t wait to see. However, I was later grateful for the natural air-conditioning that the weather provided!

The third lesson is never give up hope for humanity. A small group of people have managed to fund a school that educates hundreds. They’re the heroes you won’t see in the cinema, but they’re the ones who make all the difference in the world.
