Getaway (South Africa) - - PHOTOGRAPHY -

Photographing Cape fur seal pups at Duiker Island near Hout Bay is both an incredible experience and super challenging. The pups are liquid motion – dark, light-sucking blobs that race around in sediment-laden water at full speed against a bright surface background. Ironically, the secret to getting a decent underwater shot of these guys is to remove as much water as possible, by using a fish-eye lens and getting really close to them. In this instance, I was photographing a playful pup when I sensed I was being watched. Turning around, I found this shy little guy sneaking up on me from behind using the kelp as cover.

Equipment Nikon D300, Tokina 10-17mm fish-eye (with Subal housing and Sea & Sea strobes), ISO 400, f/8, 1/250 sec
