How to get sexy bedhead
Step one: roll out of bed. Step two: wake up. Because you’re clearly still dreaming if you think this kind of gorgeously lush bedhead comes naturally.
“I woke up like this” hair, step by step
Wash and condition your locks with a thickening shampoo and conditioner. Allow the conditioner to sit for two minutes before rinsing. Then saturate damp hair from root to tip with a volumising spray. Then rough-dry the roots, lifting and shaking them with your fingers for a maximum height, before you dry and tousle the lengths.
Once your hair is 80% dry, turn your attention to the hair around your forehead. (This is the most important area to style for that sexy, hair-falling-into-your-face look.) Divide it into five even sections – one on top and two on each side (that’s one section above the other, not next to each other).
Tie back each section and start by drying the sides in 3cm-wide sections. Holding a medium round boar-bristle brush vertically, wrap your hair toward your face. Blast the sections with the nozzle of the dryer, pulling the hair down as you follow with your hairdryer.
Next, dry the top section, holding the brush horizontally this time, and again wrap the hair toward your face. “This makes the hair swoop in, so it looks sexy and mysterious,” says stylist Matt Fugate. Finish at the back, working in large sections. “It’s all about the sexy movement around the face.”
Now for those cascading curls. Working with the same two sections on each side of your face, hold a 2.5cm curling iron vertically and wrap hair around the barrel from root to tip for five seconds (10 if your is thick). Each time you slide the iron out, secure the curled hair to your scalp with a flat metal clip.
Repeat with several large sections at the back. Then deal with the top section, holding the iron horizontally and wrapping the hair forward. Let hair cool for 20 minutes, then unclip and shake it with your fingers.
“Lightly tease your roots by backcombing with a fine tooth comb and mist hair all over with a shine-reflecting hairspray. If the curl is too curly or a weird crease forms, just dampen the hair slightly or spray it with a lightweight conditioning product and do it over,” adds hairstylist Jimmy Paul.
