Faux locks are a great way to edge up your look while maintaining all the advantages braids offer, such as convenience and hair protection. This quirky style is a favourite among celebs like Zendaya, Rihanna, Meagan Good and Jhené Aiko. Tie a headscarf around your hair when you go to bed to protect the locks from damage and use a braid spray regularly for upkeep. Try Dark

and Lovely Braid Spray (R39.95). Feeling daring? Try a bold colour like striking red or platinum blonde.

Bead it up

Darling South Africa’s senior hairstylist Thomas Tsheola explains what you’ll need to get the look. “Gather your tools: a crochet needle, thread, shells, wooden beads and metallic rings. Be creative with the patterning to achieve something that’s unique to your individual style.” He adds that metallic rings are useful as they help prevent the other beads from sliding off the braids. “Crochet the beading into your braids from the front of your head and work your way to the back. Secure the end of each one with a metallic ring. Then trim the ends into a blunt cut.”
