5 Ways to work the new season

Glamour (South Africa) - - La Une - 42 By Jenny Le Roux

1Know these trends The key word for the upcoming season is slouchy. Try wide-legged trousers with big turn-up hems, paired with a neat fitted top (to avoid looking frumpy). Apply the same approach to culottes, which look great with boots. Bubble skirts are trendy again; go for one that’s slightly wider at the bottom with a drawstring that allows you to tailor the cut to your shape. Other trends to try: cashmere or soft knit tracksuits, sleeveless coats, touches of faux fur and pyjama-style pieces in soft, embroidered satins teamed with heels and loads of chunky jewellery, or layered under an oversized coat.

2Mix up your fabrics This autumn and winter are also about combining different fabrics and patterns. Chiffon sits happily with wool, as does cotton with lace. When it comes to prints, try mixing a modern graphic design, like a stripe, with vintage-look floral prints for a stunning effect.

3Invest in key pieces Whatever the trends of the season, timeless must-haves will stay in your wardrobe forever. The combination of a classic tailored blazer, crisp white shirt, black merino polo neck and good blue jeans, for example, never goes out of style. I call it safe dressing!

A really good coat is another serious investment piece, and a long black version is my staple. If you want to mix things up and inject some fun into your wardrobe, try a threequarter length, faux-fur coat, as it is guaranteed to look wonderful now and be back in fashion next season.

4Think bright Black is a perennial winner because it makes you look 5kgs lighter instantly, and it can be a good way to hide lumps and bumps! But a small shot of colour is essential when it gets cold, even if that means adding nothing more than a bright cashmere or merino wool wrap to your all-black outfit.

5Accessorise This year’s It-bag is small and boxy, compact and square. Footwear wise, we’re in for a comfortable season as flats are trending, but if you’re after some height, go for flatforms. I’m also loving tribal-print and shweshwe necklaces. Throw a bright, statement piece over a fitted black polo neck and you’re set to stun!

The award-winning designer behind the chic and classic Habits label is giving style classes. Listen up, ladies!
