Natalie Portman stands out from other Hollywood starlets for her outstanding talent (she’s an Academy Award winner), her intelligence (she studied psychology at Harvard University) and her humanitarian work (she’s a strong advocate for animal and environmental issues).

Here, she shares some insight into the glamorous side of her life. These days, women are always multitasking. What can busy women do to be beautiful and elegant and at the same time successful, like you? I think it’s really important to carve time out for yourself. We can all lead such busy lives with work, family and everything else that we sometimes forget to leave time for ourselves. I like to treat myself to a great massage on occasion and always love to curl up with a great book. It helps centre me. Has your idea of beauty changed since you moved from the US to Paris? Yes! Parisian women are so stylish, so chic and cool. They have great style and a beauty look that looks really effortless. They don’t wear a heavy makeup look, but their complexion is always so smooth and beautiful. I’m still learning how they do it! What is a must for your makeup on the red carpet? I like to change up my red-carpet looks, but I tend to favour a strong eye. What’s your beauty routine before a red carpet? If I can get it, I think that the best beauty routine is a good night’s sleep and plenty of water. Rested, hydrated skin always looks best! What has been your most memorable discovery in terms of beauty steps or products? When I was on Léon: The Professional, they didn’t want me to look too made up so they used beetroot juice to give me a natural-looking flush. Similarly, I love using lipstick as a blush. Along with exercise and water, what other tip can you give to always look great? It may sound simple, but I think that engaging in something you love and that makes you happy helps a great deal. Whether it’s a hobby or spending time with family, happiness shows a great deal on your face. Complete these phrases: The perfect skin beauty look… … allows the person’s real skin to shine and glow. For a fresh look you must… … take good care of yourself! If you want to look young and glowy you should never… … go without sleep and water. Is there one product that has changed your skin? I would say the [1] Diorskin Forever Foundation (R815). It lasts all day, so it’s very low maintenance. I have seen real changes in my skin over time, and my skin feels smoother. Do you play with foundation according to your mood, like you would with clothes? Yes, for sure! When I’m on a red carpet, I like to go a little stronger with fuller coverage and either an eye or a lip. In particular, I like [2] Rouge Dior Lipstick (R595). Day-to-day, I go a little lighter with a tinted moisturiser. For dinner with friends, it’s somewhere in the middle. Which of your movies have you most enjoyed beauty wise? One of the great things about being an actress is that you get to try on different looks and personalities for a short time. When I did V for Vendetta, there was something liberating and simple about shaving my head. In Black Swan, I got to wear beautiful, elaborate stage makeup in the dance sequences. For Star Wars, I got to experiment with kabuki makeup. Have you picked up any tips from makeup artists? Use mascara from the root out. Who is your beauty icon? I think Angelina Jolie is incredibly beautiful. Also Charlotte Rampling. Do you follow a special diet when you’re working? I always try to be thoughtful about my diet, and I follow a vegan lifestyle. When I’m working, I step up my protein intake with nuts and other sources for more energy.
