How to: Wear sparkle by day
Fashion inspiration Lori Goldstein shows you how to set shining style standards with this advice on the season’s trend for all things bright and bling.
Stylist, editor and author of Lori Goldstein: Style Is Instinct (Harpercollins; R1 642), Lori Goldstein is one of a growing number of fashionable women who are breaking the old rules in the shiniest way possible. “Anything that sparkles invokes a sense of joy,” she explains, “and wearing something shiny, especially during the day, always makes me feel more confident.” Follow in her gleaming footsteps with this precious advice and get set to shine.
Venture into this trend with a shirt, skirt or jacket that’s partially shiny. I have a military jacket with sequinned sleeves that’s perfect. For day, I wouldn’t wear more than two (maybe two and a half) sparkly items – I’d do a skirt with a sequinned panel and a bling necklace, but not much more than that.
Glitter and sequins are inherently girlie, so I like to pair them with something masculine. A glittery T-shirt looks amazing with a heavy tweed jacket or tweed trousers. I also love the effect of a brocade jacket with gold thread worn with a crisp white shirt.
For day, stick to a monochromatic look, like navy trousers paired with a navy sequinned top. It’s work appropriate, but with a subtle, shimmery kick.
Big sequins demand a lot of attention. You know it’s too much if you can hear your clothes clang together!
