Chef and food stylist “Much to my parents’ distress and stress, I had two dresses made for the occasion: a purple number that I hated, and then this peacock-blue gown, which I wore to the dance! I truly loved myself that night and thought that everything – my hair, shoes and makeup – looked amazing. My friend Phumlani was my date, and he wore a cream suit and cornrows – talk about a throwback! But the best part of it all was the after-party at a club in George. We thought that we were so cool clubbing the night away!”

Zoë Brown

TV and radio presenter “It was thanks to financial help from generous friends that I got to wear this purple and turquoise dress by designer Madelaine Clarke to my 2008 matric dance at Kingsway High School in Amanzimtoti, KwazuluNatal. As for the accessories, that’s where I got to apply my DIY skills: I had my heels professionally spraypainted purple, and then I added turquoise diamantés and beads to the ankle straps. My clutch was made from a cereal box folded into a rectangle, glued in place and covered in the same fabric as my dress, with more diamanté embellishments. I also didn’t have to worry about a date, as Quintin had asked me to be his partner way back when we were in grade 9. It was a really fun night because we all stayed in the moment, and enjoyed it for what it was.”

TV presenter “I went to my matric dance with Neil Shraga, who later became my husband – although at the time, we were like Ross and Rachel on Friends… on again, off again! The event was held at Joburg’s Turffontein Racecourse after exams at the end of the year, but I was so busy with my work as a KTV presenter that I didn’t have time to have a gown made; I just bought a floral cocktail dress and great heels. As head girl, I had the honour of making a speech, and I had an amazing time all round, enjoying one last party as a matric group before we all went off into the adult world.”
