Kate’s earlymorning moves
In her book Pretty Happy (Harpercollins; R479), Kate shares her energising routine.
Easy stretch Stand as you breathe deeply. Stretch arms over head. Grab left wrist and lean to the right. Repeat on opposite side.
Leg warm-up Start in a squat. Bend at waist, bringing torso to thighs. Return to start. Do four reps. Lie down and stretch arms over head.
Leg stretch Sit on a mat and place a yoga strap around one foot, opposite foot flat on floor. Pull strap to gently stretch straightened leg, keeping knee slightly bent. Let straight leg fall to one side, stretching inner thigh, then let it fall to the side, stretching the band. Switch legs; repeat.
Roller Lie face up on a foam roller that is perpendicular to your body. Roll up and down spine from shoulders to middle of back.
Gentle spine twist Lie on your back, shoulders flat. Bring one knee across your body. Stretch arms out to each side. Switch sides; repeat.
“If you don’t wax regularly, book at least three weeks before your holiday so all the hairs are at the same stage of growth,” says Lisa PotterDixon, head makeup artist at Benefit Cosmetics. Prefer a cool removal cream? TRY Mandy’s Simply Smooth Hair Removal Cream (R79.95).
“If your hair is damaged, have a trim,” says celebrity hairdresser James Galvin. Then use a treatment range that targets damage for six weeks, so your hair is stronger come sunnier days.
“It’s time to reinforce the dermis so it’s structurally able to resist aggressive UV rays, which can lead to wrinkles,” says skincare professional Isabelle Benoit. TRY L’oréal Paris Skin Perfection Advanced Correcting Serum (R124.95).
“Body brushing removes dead skin cells, improves circulation and tackles ingrown hairs,” advises wax expert Sandra Lugay. TRY Elemis Body Detox Skin Brush (R560).
“A professional manicure and pedicure at this stage sets you up for a season of great nails,” explains nail expert Trish Lomax. “At home, follow up with weekly hand and foot scrubs and nightly moisturising, and apply nail and cuticle oil twice daily.” TRY Avon Foot Works Clay Mask (R61.90).
“Exfoliate dead cells with a combination of AHAS (alpha hydroxy acids) and salicylic acid,” says Isabelle. “Rather do this now than when the sun is stronger to prevent the risk of inflammation and dark spots” on your face. TRY Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant (R890).
“With a month to go, avoid excess time in the sun and sunbeds, as any UV exposure before having a wax can lead to added skin sensitivity,” explains Sandra.
“Do patch tests to see how many layers of self-tanner best suits you,” suggests tan expert James Read. “Take a picture in natural light to judge the final result.” We adore Tan Organic Self-tan (R599).
Give your skin some nourishment with a multi-purpose oil.
“Have your brows tinted and waxed three days before your trip, so that there’s no irritation when you’re in the sun,” advises Lisa. Groom them with Benefit Brow Zings Shaping Kit (R445).
“Book a wax 48 hours before you leave,” says Sandra. “Wax takes to the hairs better when the skin isn’t moisturised; so avoid any products that may cause a barrier to the wax on the scheduled day.”
A longlasting gel mani and pedi is great, but remember that nails grow faster in hot weather. You may need your nails filled after a week and a half instead of the usual two. New self-tanners make it easier to get a glow: there’s no fragrant smell and they absorb faster. Apply with a mitt after you’ve had your nails done, and wash it off as late as you can the following day to help it last longer.
Now you’re bikini ready for the pool or beach. And if you’re headed to a destination that requires a flight or long distance, “hours of travel can dehydrate your skin,” reveals consultant dermatologist Dr Justine Hextall. “Treat it with a hydrating mask and apply a soothing moisturiser.” TRY Bioderma Hydrabio Moisturising Mask (R249.95). For extra freshness, regularly spritz your skin with a hydrating mist.
