Aron is a nine-year-old Polish boy who wants to misbehave, explore the world and grow up. But the year is 1939 and Aron is Jewish, which means he and his family soon find themselves cold, starving, diseased and sentenced to a slow death in the Warsaw Ghetto. There can only be a heartbreakingly cruel outcome to this story, and yet the dark humour and humanity that shine through make for a profoundly compassionate and utterly gripping masterwork.
