Live by Night
Based on Dennis Lehane’s novel, this dark crime drama set in Boston, US, during the Prohibition era, centres around a range of characters in the world of organised crime. Mobster Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck) lives the high life of a bootlegger and outlaw, sleeping with Emma (Sienna Miller) – his rival’s mistress – and working with gunrunner Graciella (Zoe Saldana). It’s more than the usual gambling, speakeasy shoot ’em up, as the cinematography is exquisite and the 1920s era is wonderfully evoked.
Based on the true story of Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton) and his wife Mildred (Ruth Negga) who were forced to leave Virginia after they married in 1958. The couple’s decade-long fight against the town’s anti-miscegenation laws makes for a moving film about two ordinary people whose love inspired extraordinary change.
After being dumped by her boyfriend and losing her place as maid of honour, Eloise (Anna Kendrick) finds herself at that wedding reception table: the pathetic one near the bathrooms. Seated with a mishmash of wouldn’t-matter-if-theyweren’t-there guests, she finds that being an outcast brings its own rewards.
Fifty Shades Darker
Get ready for more smouldering glances in the second instalment of the sexy spectacle that is the Fifty Shades trilogy. Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) must wrestle with his inner demons to win back Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). Throw in a murder plot and some de rigueur sex scenes, and you have an adequate… um, romance.
