Blueberry Café R103 Nottingham Rd, Netherwood Farm; 033 266 7132

Lovely views, a roaring fire and fresh food, including produce from the restaurant’s own garden, make for special times. We particularly loved the breakfast dishes like blueberry crumpets with egg, bacon and syrup (R75), and homemade muesli with berries, yoghurt and honeycomb (R80).

Stretta Café 50 Old Main Rd, The Colony Shopping Centre, Hillcrest; 031 765 8862

This appealing modern eatery puts the emphasis on authentic Italian cuisine, and you can’t go wrong with the Zucca (spaghetti with butternut, caramelised onion, feta, Parmesan and balsamic glaze; R75). The dessert menu includes standards, like chocolate brownies (R35), but our resistance crumbles at the sight of Huberto’s artisanal ice cream (R35).

Olive & Oil 16 Old Main Rd, Lillies Lifestyle Centre, Hillcrest; 031 765 6214

The splendid Mediterranean dishes here include Creamy Gorgonzola and Bacon Chicken (R130), and herby rack of lamb (R260), and the chocolate brownie with Bar-one sauce (R46) is a sumptuous conclusion to any meal.

Kloof Street House 30 Kloof St, Gardens; 021 423 4413

With its Victorian-inspired decor, enchanting gardens and plenty of fireplaces, Kloof Street House is brasseriestyle dining with a difference. Start with the pan-fried Patagonian calamari (R95), and then move onto a tasty main like ostrich fillet and Waldorf salad (R185). The standout dessert: delectable salted caramel cheesecake with popcorn (R75).

Societi Bistro 50 Orange St, Gardens; 021 424 2100

A multi-award-winning establishment with a following that ranges from A-listers to devoted locals, Societi serves upmarket food in a cosy, hugely inviting setting. The rich mushroom risotto (R85) is the best in town, and the mains range from vegetarian options to hearty pork neck in mustard cream (R145). The Chocolate Nemesis is legendary, or for something lighter, try refreshing sorbet (R17 per scoop).
