“Hamilton and Geoffrey are a cross between a Flat-coated Retriever and a Labrador. The pups where born two years ago in Muldersdrift, Joburg, on the property of my friend, Mia Ziervogel. The characteristics of both breeds are what I loved most – they’re energetic family dogs and good swimmers, and their coats are low-maintenance.
“My husband, Jean-daniel, and I first decided to take only one puppy (Hamilton), but then changed our minds and adopted his brother, too. We have never regretted doing so, as they are best friends.
“We prepared our home for the puppies beforehand, protecting stairs and dangerous areas. We acclimatised them to the house progressively; only now do they have access to the entire house. We also have a cat, Cleo, and this gave her time to get used to the new ‘tenants’. Cleo guards the house while the dogs come to work with us on most days.”
