Stud­ies of more than 3 000 peo­ple found a strik­ing link be­tween self-com­pas­sion and the four pri­mary ar­eas of health and well­be­ing: eat­ing, stress­ing less, sleep and ex­er­cise. “It all links to emo­tional re­silience,” says clin­i­cal psy­chol­o­gist Dr Catherine Green. “It’s about fac­ing dif­fi­cult feel­ings and ac­cept­ing im­per­fec­tions, in­stead of avoid­ing or at­tack­ing them.” Now steal it

If you are feel­ing down or inse­cure, Dr Green sug­gests ap­ply­ing this self-nur­tur­ing tech­nique: “Treat your­self in the way that you would treat a good friend. If they were suf­fer­ing, down or inse­cure, what would you say? What would you en­cour­age them to do?”
