A wordsmith and a good Samaritan
Hein might not have contributed a story to this month’s magazine, but this good Samaritan still deserves a special mention. If it hadn’t been for his help when Evan lost two tyres in the Karoo, we might not have had a story about Angola in this month’s magazine!
What is your earliest travel memory?
A trip from Bellville all the way to Etosha with my parents in 1972.
The best place you’ve ever visited?
Mozambique. I love the warm water there.
What is your number one travel tip?
Take enough spare wheels and water (Evan might also gain something from this advice!).
Do you plan your trips in detail or just go with the flow?
I travel as the wind takes me, but it’s bitten me hard once in that very same Mozambique. I didn’t book any campsites before leaving and when we got there, everything was full. I had to pay for five-star hotels all the way!
Which destination in Southern Africa would you like to visit?
The south of Angola. I was stationed there in my army years and I can still recall the natural beauty of the area.
