What are the trails like? Loop 1 is mostly a good twin-track up to a lookout point and back, but with some steep climbs along the way. Loop 2 is a bit more difficult with technical rocky obstacles. Do I need a 4x4? Only 4x4s with low range gears are suitable for the trails, but you can drive Loop 1 with highway-terrain tyres and running boards. Where can we stay? There’s a long list of accommodation options, ranging from a green campsite suitable for caravans to bush camps, basic self-catering units, permanent caravans and spacious chalets. What else can we do? Mountain biking, fishing, bird watching and hiking. The farm is also popular among stargazers. Costs:
Trails Day visitors: R150 per vehicle to the lookout point or R290 for both trails. Visitors staying over: R120 to the lookout point or R240 for both trails. Camping R270 per 4x4 vehicle and R100 for a 4x2 (remember: 4x2s aren’t allowed on the trails); R100 per adult and R50 per schoolchild per night. Accommodation Prices range from R90 per person per night to camp (R50 for children under 10) to R450 for chalets sleeping two people and R1800 for De Ouda Opstal for a minimum of six people.
