The tow bar. The bar is not standard and costs R1 580 extra, plus R2 050 for the harness. Labour is excluded and differs from dealer to dealer. Volkswagen allows a nose weight of up to 130 kg, which exceeds South Africa’s legal prescription by 30 kg. Suspension. As you can expect from a bakkie, the rear suspension is quite stiff. It gave way only 2 cm under the
nose weight of the Armadillo. Weight? 2 350 kg with the driver in the Amarok, a full fuel tank, and the 95 kg nose weight of the Armadillo on the tow bar. Interior. The front seats’ hight is adjustable but for a six-foot person there is still a hand-size space above the head. At the back your knees touch the seat in front of you with two fingers above your kneecap. Speed. The speedometer is almost 100% accurate. If it says you’re travelling 100 km/h, the GPS shows you’re doing 98 km/h. Fuel consumption. For this size engine one can’t complain: 11,49 ℓ/100 km (8,7 km/ℓ). The computer’s reading differs only slightly: 12,5 ℓ/100 km (8 km/ℓ). Finish. Stylish, durable, sturdy. The interior finish is dark and light grey with dull silver strokes as well as shiny black plastic parts on, amongst other things, the steering wheel. Extras. Things like metallic paint is extra at R1 600, and 17-inch rims cost R7 000 while 19-inch rims cost R11 950 extra.
Other Amarok double cab models Besides the nine 2 ℓ double cab models and the test car there are two 3 ℓ models: 3.0 TDI 4Motion Highline Plus (automatic) R716 600, and the 3.0 TDI 4Motion Extreme (automatic) R748 600.
