The fourth type of 4WD system is coincidentally the oldest. The Spyker brothers may have invented the mechanical drive but it was the illustrious engineer Ferdinand Porsche who in 1899 used four electric motors to each power the four wheels of a small truck. Electric vehicles were all the rage during the turn of the 19th century, and were it not for inadequate batteries at the time, internal combustion engines would never have become as established as they did. But the electric car is making a comeback thanks to people like Elon Musk and improved battery technology that allows for greater range per charge. Forgive me if I sound heartless but your burbling V8 is fast becoming obsolete. The time is approaching when you’ll have to trade your gnarly bundu basher for a whirring electric jobbie. But don’t despair; electric motors are known for making huge amounts of torque quickly. The potential therefore exists that an electric 4WD off-roader may one day be equal or even more capable than current gas guzzlers. Provided the next generation are as in to offroading as we are.
