AluBox specialises in custommade aluminium crates and has now designed a “kitchen crate”. It’s as big as a standard 80 ℓ plastic container and is 55 cm long and 38 cm wide and high. It’s so sturdy that you can put it on the back of your bakkie or in the boot of your car. Paul Lydes-Uings heads up AluBox and says the crate is so strong you can also use it as a step. It comes fully equipped with cutlery and crockery for four, which includes knives, forks, spoons, cups and plates right through to a cutting board, frying pan and egg lifter. The crate’s lid opens up to the top but then the front section folds flat towards you. It’s similar to how caravan builders built their outside kitchens, with the side door that folds down as a work surface. There’s a mounted oneburner gas stove on the surface and you get an extra gas cylinder. The whole thing weighs only 12 kg and you can easily place it anywhere in the campsite or next to the road.
