Smoked ham and bean soup

The per­fect soup if you’ve just ar­rived some­where and need to dish up some­thing hot quickly.


(enough for 4)

4 kassler steaks, cut into blocks

4 ta­ble­spoons but­ter 1 onion, diced

1 large car­rot, peeled and finely chopped

2 cel­ery rib­bons, finely chopped

2 cans (410 g each) but­ter beans or can­nellini beans, drained and rinsed

1 ℓ chicken stock salt and pep­per, to taste

Here’s how

1 Braai the kassler blocks in half of the but­ter un­til cooked through and crisp. Re­move the meat from the pot.

2 Add the onion, car­rot and cel­ery to the same pot with the rest of the but­ter and cook un­til soft.

3 Stir in the beans, stock and the blocks of meat and leave the soup to sim­mer for 15 min­utes.

4 Mush the soup with a fork or the back of a wooden spoon and flavour to taste with salt and pep­per. Serve with fresh bread and pars­ley.
