To celebrate Hear­ing Aware­ness Month, the Carel du Toit Cen­tre in East Lon­don, where deaf chil­dren learn to speak, in con­junc­tion with the Frere Hos­pi­tal speech ther­apy and au­di­ol­ogy depart­ment and pri­vate au­di­ol­o­gists, held a sound aware­ness cam­paign at Vin­cent Park from Septem­ber 3 to 5. This was in con­junc­tion with an art com­pe­ti­tion for Grade Rs de­pict­ing ‘Sound Around Me’. The won­der­ful bright and colour­ful pic­tures al­lowed the cen­tre to draw at­ten­tion to their cam­paign, pro­mot­ing aware­ness of the im­por­tance of hear­ing in our lives. Of the three pic­tures which re­ceived the most votes, two were from St Anne’s Pri­mary School and one from South­ern­wood Pri­mary which is seen in this pic­ture. They will each re­ceive a gift voucher from Free Range Kids. The win­ning school was West Bank School who re­ceive a gift voucher from Ma­clears Whole­sale Sta­tion­ers. In­for­ma­tion was avail­able to the public on hear­ing loss, risk fac­tors and com­mu­ni­ca­tion de­vel­op­ment.
